James is a senior staff surgeon in the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, University Cardiovascular Surgical Associates at Lifespan Health.
He has been an attending surgeon since 1993 and has been a Rhode Island "Top Doc" selected by his peers since the poll began in 1995. He continues to be the most clinically productive member of his group at Lifespan, and he was previously Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at Southcoast Health in Massachusetts between 2012-2017.
A native of Minnesota, he moved to Pennsylvania to attend The Pennsylvania State University where he graduated magna cum laude with a major in Premed/Chemistry. His education continued at Temple University School of Medicine, followed by a surgical residency at Temple University in Philadelphia, and he completed his training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Wayne State University in Detroit. James has been involved in the development of a cardiothoracic surgical training program at Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya, East Africa since 2005, where he leads staff and curriculum development through yearly visits to teach and train residents and fellows.
Additionally, James is a cardiothoracic surgery board examiner for the College of Surgeons of Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa, and the Cardiothoracic Council Chief for the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons.
